This week Pfizer Inc. recalled a blood pressure drug when elevated levels of nitrosamine, a potential carcinogen, was found in some of its products. Several lots of Accuretic, Quinapril and Hydrochlorothiazide tablets were found to be impure. While nitrosamines are commonly found in water and foods, especially in cured and grilled meats, some dairy and vegetables, ongoing exposure to this chemical compound increases the risk of cancer.
While there is no evidence of immediate concern, many who take these medications will be on them for years if not decades, so considering alternative approaches to treating hypertention may be wise.
